Francesco Jodice’s documentary explores some aspects of the Japanese youth’s social behaviors namely the two phenomena known as “otaku”: geek, nerd, enthusiast, and “hikikomori”: someone who is completely locked up in their shell. Some statistics claim there are about one million hikikomori in Japan. These young people choose voluntary reclusion pursuing the complete annihilation of communication and relationships, for long periods of time they don’t leave their room turning to virtual games and manga as a source of joy.
